How Much Does a Family Vacation Cost in 2027? Family of 3, 4 and 5 (With the Math)
Last checked Nov 6, 2026 Reviewed by Dana Whitlock
A one-week family vacation for four costs about $2,200 to $7,600 in our build-up, checked Nov 6, 2026. That covers seven nights, transport, food and activities. The low end is a road trip to national parks, the high end a flight to a theme-park city. We added up published prices, federal limits and our stated assumptions, so this is a build-up and not a survey average.
- Family of 3
- $2,045 to $6,060 a week
- Family of 4
- $2,201 to $7,555 a week
- Family of 5
- $3,484 to $10,624 a week, with a second room
- Family of 6
- $3,617 to $12,120 a week
- Biggest swing
- food and tickets, then flights
- Left out
- rental car, parking, bag fees, resort fees, insurance
In this guide
The low end is hotel-based and uses the cheapest month's room, so it is not a floor. At October's room rate it is about $2,486, and camping or a shorter trip costs less. To budget your own week, swap your own quotes for our room rate, fares and tickets in the line-by-line tables below.
What does a family vacation cost by family size?
A week costs from about $2,000 to $12,100 depending on family size, how you travel and what you do. The table below shows two kinds of week, each with driving and with flying. The thrifty week is a road-trip style week with groceries, one meal out a day and national parks. Its room is the 50-market average for January, the cheapest month, from Engine, a business-travel booking platform. The theme-park week has a pricier city, restaurant meals and two park days.
The thrifty rows are not a floor. At Engine's October figure of $174, the top of its year, one room adds about $285, so the road trip for four is about $2,486. Those rows also assume a hotel, and camping, cabins or a shorter trip cost less.
| Week | Family of 3 | Family of 4 | Family of 5 | Family of 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thrifty, drive | $2,045 | $2,201 | $3,484 | $3,617 |
| Thrifty, fly | $3,055 | $3,656 | $5,384 | $5,963 |
| Theme park, drive | $5,050 | $6,100 | $8,724 | $9,774 |
| Theme park, fly | $6,060 | $7,555 | $10,624 | $12,120 |
| Family size | Per day, whole family | Per person, whole week |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | $292 to $866 | $682 to $2,020 |
| 4 | $314 to $1,079 | $550 to $1,889 |
| 5 | $498 to $1,518 | $697 to $2,125 |
| 6 | $517 to $1,731 | $603 to $2,020 |
Family of 5 is the jump to watch. One more person adds $1,283 to the thrifty road trip, because we assume a second room.
Where does each number come from?
Each line below comes from a published source and carries its check date. Lines marked as our assumption are choices we made, and you should replace them with your own.
| Line | Thrifty week | Theme-park week | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drive | 32.63¢ a mile | 32.63¢ a mile | AAA Your Driving Costs 2026, medium SUV, fuel and maintenance | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Distance | 1,000 miles round trip | 1,000 miles round trip | Our assumption | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Fly, per ticket | $445.26 | $445.26 | Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) average domestic fare, Q2 2026 | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Room, per night | $138 | $199 | Engine average of 50 markets' medians from business-traveler searches, January; General Services Administration (GSA) FY2027 limit, Los Angeles and Orange County | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Room tax | 13% | 13% | Our assumption, check your city | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Groceries, a week | $148, $171, $230 for 3, 4, 5+ | None | Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2025 spending by household size, food at home ÷ 365 × 7 | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Meals out | $19 a person a day | $86 a person a day | GSA FY2027 lunch allowance, standard rate; GSA FY2027 meals and incidentals limit, same area | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Activities | $80 for the family | $224 a person a day, two days | National Park Service (NPS) annual pass; top of the Disneyland 1-day range | Nov 6, 2026 |
Three notes change how you read those inputs:
- GSA figures are limits. The General Services Administration (GSA), the federal agency that sets travel limits for the continental US, says "The lodging per diem rates are a maximum amount," so they cap what a federal traveler is repaid and are not market prices. Meals and incidentals at the full $86 are a ceiling, and we count children as adults.
- The fare is an average of all domestic tickets. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) counts "round-trip or one-way for which no return is purchased," so a true round trip may cost more. Taxes are in, and fees "paid at the airport or onboard the aircraft" are out.
- The room is a market figure from business travel. Engine's $138 averages 50 US markets, each a median of the lowest public rate shown per hotel in business travelers' searches on its booking platform, for January, the lowest month of the 50-market average, pooled from mid-2024 to mid-2026. Its October figure is $174. Engine does not say whether its rates include tax, so our 13% on top may overstate the room line slightly. The FY2027 federal standard limit is lower, at $113 before tax.
The full build-up, line by line
The thrifty week's food, room and activities cost $1,875 for a family of four, and the theme-park week's cost $5,774. Add one transport line to either: $326 to drive or $1,781 to fly.
| Line | Family of 3 | Family of 4 | Family of 5 | Family of 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transport: drive | $326 | $326 | $326 | $326 |
| Transport: fly | $1,336 | $1,781 | $2,226 | $2,672 |
| Rooms, with tax | $1,092 for 1 room | $1,092 for 1 room | $2,183 for 2 rooms | $2,183 for 2 rooms |
| Food | $547 | $703 | $895 | $1,028 |

The math for a family of four
Here are both ends of the range as receipts, with the arithmetic in each line.
Example, not a price. Your quote will differ.
- Drive, 1,000 miles × $0.3263$326
- Room, 7 nights × $138$966
- Room tax, 13% of $966$126
- Groceries, $8,912 ÷ 365 × 7$171
- Meals out, 4 people × $19 × 7 days$532
- America the Beautiful pass$80
- Per day$314
- Per person$550
Example, not a price. Your quote will differ.
- Flights, 4 × $445.26$1,781
- Room, 7 nights × $199$1,393
- Room tax, 13% of $1,393$181
- Food, 4 people × $86 × 7 days$2,408
- Tickets, 4 people × $224 × 2 days$1,792
- Per day$1,079
- Per person$1,889
To run your own quotes, try the calculator's per-person line. For the thrifty fly-in for four, enter 4 travelers, 7 nights, 1 room, $138 hotel, 13% tax, $445.26 flights per person, $25.11 food per person per day and $80 activities. It returns about $3,656, or $914 per person.
What is not in these totals?
The totals leave out anything we could not source to one fair number, so treat each as a starting figure.
- Rental car. A fly-in park trip usually needs one. At the $60 a day sample we use elsewhere, seven days adds $420, before you decide on the counter's insurance cover.
- Fees on the room. Some properties add a mandatory nightly charge, and our list of resort fees by hotel shows how much. With two rooms you pay it twice.
- Parking and bag fees. BTS fares exclude bags, and Disneyland lists theme park parking as its own purchase.
- Insurance and souvenirs. Both depend on your family.
- Long-drive nights. Each overnight stop on the way adds about $156, the thrifty room with tax.
Card holds are not a cost, but they tie up money during the trip. Our guide to how long a hotel deposit hold lasts explains when you get that money back.
Why this page does not use a single average
We add up prices because no single average we could trace describes a family week. One figure you may have seen is $7,964 for a family of four for a week. A page published Oct 20, 2026 states it with no source, and we could not trace it to a survey, publisher or year, so it is not in our build-up.
The closest figure we could open is $7,936, shown beside $11,904 for six on a page last modified in December 2024. Both equal $1,984 a person times the group size, so the $7,936 total does not appear to reflect a family sharing a room. Our $7,555 top end sits near $7,936 and $7,964 only because it stacks a flight, restaurant meals at a federal limit and two top-price park days. Treat that closeness between our top end and those two figures as coincidence and not as confirmation.
Published figures differ mainly because they price different trips. Most of the pages below say what they count, and Travel Value Finder publishes its own sourced build-up.
| Page | Total | Trip | What it counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| This page | $2,201 to $7,555 | 7 nights, drive or fly | Transport, rooms, food, activities |
| MoneyLion, June 2026 | $3,206 to $4,523 | 7 nights, Aug 2 to 9, 20 US destinations | Meals, drinks, three cheapest hotels near downtown, average airfare; no attractions listed |
| Travel Value Finder, Oct 2026 | $777 to $3,272 | 4 nights by car, camping at the low end; 7 nights by air at the top | Getting there, lodging, food, some fees |
| Endless Travel Plans, July 2026 | $2,400 to $7,200 | One week, domestic | Credits survey data from SpendMeNot and NerdWallet, which we did not read |
MoneyLion's range sits around our $3,656 thrifty fly-in, though it lists no activities. Travel Value Finder names the same causes of the gaps: trip length, flying or driving, one room or two, restaurant or grocery meals, and the age of the data.
The BLS tables we read have no line for vacations, and the nearest lines show why a single average is weak. In 2025, four-person households averaged $1,678 on other lodging, $1,490 on public and other transportation and $1,363 on fees and admissions, $4,531 in total for the whole year.
Those three lines are broader than vacations. BLS's glossary counts school and college lodging in the first and mass transit in the second. The averages also include households that took no trip, and they leave out gas and restaurant meals on a trip. Treat the $4,531 as a rough yardstick, not a vacation price.
What moves the total?
Food, tickets, the number of rooms, distance and the calendar, school holidays included, move the total most.
Food. Food swings nearly as much as tickets: $703 to $2,408 for four, a gap of $1,705 against $1,712 between the $80 pass and two top-price Disneyland days. Most of that gap is our assumption and not a market price. The thrifty week buys groceries plus one $19 meal out per person a day, and the theme-park week spends the full $86 federal limit per person, children included. Every $10 a person a day adds $280 a week for four.
Food you would buy anyway. Four-person households spent $41 a day on food at home and out in 2025, per BLS (($8,912 + $6,139) ÷ 365). About $289 of a week's vacation food is money you would have spent at home. If food is your largest line, weigh it against a resort's prices with our all-inclusive break-even math.
Tickets. A ticket line can be $35 or nearly $1,800. Prices below were read on Nov 6, 2026.
| Choice | Published price | Family of 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Yosemite or Yellowstone, one vehicle, 7 days, US residents | $35 | $35 |
| America the Beautiful annual pass, US residents | $80 | $80 |
| SeaWorld Orlando, 2 single days, presale offer | From $59.99 a day, plus tax | $480 |
| Disneyland, 2 single days, lowest date | $104 a day | $832 |
| Disneyland, 2 single days, highest date | $224 a day | $1,792 |
Disneyland's page says its 1-day price "ranges from $104 - $224 based on date selected." The same trip can differ by $960 on dates alone. We could not read child prices, an age below which entry is free, or multi-day prices there, so a family with young children may pay less.
Babies under 2. Our totals price every child as an adult, so a baby under 2 can bring them down. Delta says a child under 2 "can travel on the lap of an adult for free (within the United States)," and each lap child takes $445 off the fly rows. Delta also recommends buying a seat with an approved child safety seat for children under 2, and Delta says that seat needs a purchased ticket, so the fly rows stay as shown. National park entry in our thrifty week is per vehicle: $35 for one private vehicle at Yosemite or Yellowstone, and at parks that charge by vehicle the annual pass covers "one private vehicle fee," so children do not change it.
Rooms. A second room adds $1,092 in the thrifty week and $1,574 in the theme-park week. We assume two rooms from five people, so check the maximum occupancy on your listing and compare a suite or rental home.
The calendar. The federal lodging limit for Myrtle Beach rises about 80% in summer, from $113 in January to $202 from June to August, a gap of $623 over seven nights. Orlando runs the other way, with an Engine median of $101 in August and September against $150 in February, a gap of $343 a week. The sources we read publish no rate for spring-break or Christmas weeks, so price your exact school-holiday dates before you set a budget. Our guide to the cheapest travel months has more cities.
Distance. Driving costs $33 per 100 miles at AAA's running cost for a medium SUV. On that cost alone it stays cheaper than tickets for a very long way, as the table shows.
| Family size | Flights | At AAA's 32.63¢ | At the IRS's 76¢ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | $1,336 | 4,094 miles | 1,758 miles |
| 4 | $1,781 | 5,458 miles | 2,343 miles |
| 5 | $2,226 | 6,823 miles | 2,929 miles |
| 6 | $2,672 | 8,187 miles | 3,515 miles |
The table compares running cost against tickets only. It leaves out overnight stops ($156 each), extra food and days on the road and, on the fly side, a rental car ($420 at our $60-a-day sample). For four on a 3,000-mile round trip, driving costs $979 against $1,781 in tickets. Add four overnight stops ($624) to the drive and the rental to the flight, and it is $1,603 against $2,201, before road food.
AAA's 32.63¢ is fuel and maintenance only. Its total for a medium SUV, with ownership costs, is 96.32¢ a mile at 15,000 miles a year. The IRS business rate of 76 cents, in force from July 1, 2026, sits between the two. Use AAA's lower figure for money leaving your account on the trip and the IRS rate for a fuller cost. AAA's national average for regular gas was $4.07 a gallon on Nov 6, 2026.
Older averages. Transport has risen far faster than the rest, so a figure from an earlier year runs low. The BLS Consumer Price Index shows the change from September 2025 to September 2026.
| Cost line | Change |
|---|---|
| Motor fuel | +34.9% |
| Airline fares | +22.4% |
| Lodging away from home | +4.4% |
| Food away from home | +3.5% |
| Admissions | +3.2% |
How this page was built
We read each US input from its publisher on Nov 6, 2026, used it unchanged and added the lines by script. The BLS grocery figures are 2025 dollars. The international figures in the FAQ are our own division of Japan Tourism Agency and INE tables, read the same day, with yen converted at the IRS 2025 average of 149.632 to the dollar. Prices are for planning a 2027 trip and will move, so we recheck this page every January. We sell no trips, and no link on this page earns a commission.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a vacation cost for a family of 3?
About $2,045 to $6,060 for seven nights in our build-up. Three people usually fit in one room, so the room line matches a family of four. Flights are $445 less and food is lower.
How much does a vacation cost for a family of 5?
About $3,484 to $10,624 for seven nights, assuming two rooms. If one room or suite holds all five at the same price, the totals drop by about $1,092 to $1,574.
How much does a vacation cost for a family of 6?
About $3,617 to $12,120 for seven nights, with two rooms and one vehicle. A family that needs a second car or a larger rental should add that to the drive rows. The grocery line uses BLS's five-or-more row, which averages 5.6 people.
How much does a family vacation cost per day?
For a family of four, $314 to $1,079 a day, with transport included. Without transport, the range is $268 to $825 a day. Long trips cost less per day, since the transport line is paid once.
How much does an international family vacation cost?
About $4,872 for four for seven nights before flights, if each person spends what American leisure visitors spent in Japan in 2025: about $174 a night without shopping, by our division of the Japan Tourism Agency's survey. That is $174 × 4 × 7, with children counted as adults and no saving for a shared room.
Spain comes to about €3,640 to €4,760 for the same four people and nights, at about €130 to €170 a person a day. That daily figure is our subtraction of international transport and package holidays from provisional September 2026 figures for all international tourists from INE, Spain's statistics office. Our daily budget by region page shows both calculations. We found no official average fare for international trips, so add your own quotes: at a sample $750 a ticket, four flights add $3,000.
Is there a family vacation cost calculator?
Yes. Our trip cost calculator takes travelers and rooms separately, then shows the total and the cost per person. You can start with figures from this build-up, such as $138 a room night and $445.26 a ticket, and replace them with your own quotes.
